Wyatt Lilly for West Virginia State Senate District 6: Mercer, Mingo, McDowell, and Wayne Counties

Wyatt and Clean Water

Right now, hundreds of families in our district lack clean, drinkable water. In fact, some cannot even bathe in the water from their taps. We must fix this crisis now. To achieve this, Wyatt will lead the fight to ensure everyone in Mercer, McDowell, Mingo, and Wayne Counties has clean water. Ultimately, water is life, and using tax dollars to provide it is a vital investment for our community.

Wyatt and Healthcare

The governor recently revealed plans to sell Welch Hospital. This state-run facility provides critical care to McDowell County and surrounding areas. Officials claim the hospital lost $17 million last year; however, the data tells a different story. Specifically, Dr. Tony Kelly, Chief of Staff at Welch Hospital, confirmed the hospital billed $41 million against $30 million in expenditures. Consequently, a for-profit buyer will inevitably cut services, slash staff benefits, and eventually close the doors. This would leave a massive healthcare gap in a county that desperately needs its hospital. Therefore, Wyatt will protect Welch Hospital so it can keep serving McDowell County families.

Wyatt and Wages

The national minimum wage has stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009. West Virginia sits slightly higher at $8.75, but this is still not a livable wage. Consequently, these low wages lock full-time workers into a cycle of poverty. Nevertheless, Wyatt believes in the dignity of hard work and the American dream. If you work hard, you should be able to make ends meet. For this reason, Wyatt supports raising the West Virginia minimum wage to $12.00 an hour by 2028.

Wyatt and Education

Over the last several years, lawmakers stripped hundreds of millions of dollars from public education to fund private school vouchers through the “Hope Scholarship.” Unfortunately, this program threatens the very survival of West Virginia Public Education. As a result, our district has already faced teacher layoffs, staff cuts, and school closures. To remedy this, Wyatt will fight to stop this massive giveaway and return your tax dollars to public schools. In addition, he supports fully funding the state PEIA program to protect benefits for teachers, State Troopers, and all state employees.
